Lace and whitework were common trimmings for urban as well as rural dress. The labor-intensive production of lace ensured that was considered a luxury good throughout history. Regional dress from across Europe readily incorporated lace into bonnets, collars and cuffs. In some cases, lace could be created through knitting into decorative stockings.
